“The testimony of Jesus,” said the angel to John, “is the spirit of prophecy.” Revelation 19:10. It is the keeping of the commandments of God, and the recognition of the revival of the spirit of prophecy by the remnant of the church, or the Christians of the last generation, that stirs the ire of the dragon. – 1SP 11.1

Before diving deeper into her specific works, let’s sample some of her most eloquent passages. The first is from The Desire of Ages, her magnum opus on the life of Christ:
“Our great need is our only claim on God’s mercy. … When Satan tells you that you are a sinner, and cannot hope to receive blessing from God, tell him that Christ came into the world to save sinners. We have nothing to recommend us to God; but the plea that we may urge now and ever is our utterly helpless condition that makes His redeeming power a necessity.”
These words about relationships come from her book The Ministry of Healing:
“In the schools of today the conclusions that learned men have reached as the result of their scientific investigations are carefully taught and fully explained; while the impression is distinctly given that if these learned men are correct, the Bible cannot be. Skepticism is attractive to the human mind.”
Enjoy this profound insight into the science of prayer from her most translated book, Steps to Christ:
“The warfare against self is the greatest battle that was ever fought. The yielding of self, surrendering all to the will of God, requires a struggle; but the soul must submit to God before it can be renewed in holiness.”
And from her classic on the teachings of Christ, Christ’s Object Lessons:
“Never a prayer is offered, however faltering, never a tear is shed, however secret, never a sincere desire after God is cherished, however feeble, but the Spirit of God goes forth to meet it. Even before the prayer is uttered or the yearning of the heart made known, grace from Christ goes forth to meet the grace that is working upon the human soul.”

In her final public address at the 1909 General Conference Session, Ellen G. White’s message regarding the Bible was a powerful and memorable physical demonstration. She held up a large Bible with trembling, aged hands and admonished the church leaders with these words: “Brethren and Sisters, I commend unto you this Book“.
Context of the address
This final message addressed a significant challenge within the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Some church members were placing her writings on the same level of authority as the Bible, and she aimed to correct this misconception directly.
In her final words to the church leaders, her point was clear:
- The Bible is the ultimate source of truth and the standard by which everything must be tested.
- Her writings were given as a “lesser light” to lead people back to the “greater light” of the Bible, which many had neglected.
- She instructed the leaders not to say “Sister White said this,” but instead to find out what the “Lord God of Israel says, and then do what He commands”.
Ellen G. White’s “The Great Controversy” vision describes a cosmic conflict between Christ and Satan, tracing its history from the rebellion in heaven to the final victory of good over evil. Key themes include God’s enduring love and the struggle to uphold Bible truth, the historical development of the Christian church through eras like the Reformation, prophetic interpretations of end-time events such as the Second Coming, the Investigative Judgment and the Mark of the Beast, and the pivotal role of the church in this ongoing battle for humanity’s salvation.
This gesture and final words were a symbolic culmination of her lifelong effort to uphold the supremacy of the Bible over her own writings. The moment reinforced her consistent teaching that the Scriptures, not her “Testimonies,” were the ultimate standard of faith and practice.
Her actions and words underscored that the Bible should be the ground of faith for all believers, and it alone contains the knowledge necessary for salvation.
